Steven Smith: The Godfather of Sneaker Design
Steven Smith is a renowned sneaker designer whose work has spanned over three decades. He has created some of the world's most iconic silhouettes for brands like Nike, adidas, Reebok, New Balance, FILA, and YEEZY with Kanye West. Many of his early designs continue to be popular today through collaborations and updates. Smith began his career at New Balance in 1986, where he designed models such as the brand's 574, 997, and 1500s. He later joined adidas as a Senior Designer and changed the world's perception of high-tops with the launch of adidas Artillery. After a year at adidas, Smith moved to Reebok as Director of Innovation Design. Under his leadership, he launched the brand's signature Instapump Fury, which was innovative in every way. It featured a no-lace closure, a chunky design, and was aesthetically incomparable to anything else on the market at the time. Later, at FILA, Smith partnered with NBA player Grant Hill on his signature shoe line. He then joined Nike, where he worked on models such as the Nike Shox Monster, Nike Air Streak Spectrum Plus, and Nike Air Spiridon Cage 2. Since 2016, Smith has been working with Kanye at YEEZY, pushing the boundaries of sneaker design once again. He has had a hand in creating popular models like the YEEZY Boost 700 runner and the YEEZY 451 sneakers. **I**f you ask your favorite sneaker designer - who is his favorite sneaker designer - most likely he will say, “It’s definitely Steven Smith!”
